Keep the container on private property when the site allows it

A firm driveway or other private work area is usually the simplest place to start the placement conversation. We still need the full approach. Tell us about narrow alleys, parked cars, gates, low branches, overhead lines, soft pavement, and tight turns. A box can fit on paper and still leave too little working room for the delivery vehicle.

Mark the area that must stay open during the rental. Leave access to garages, meters, hydrants, and shared drives. If the project will block a normal parking space, tell everyone using the property before delivery. Moving a loaded container is not the same as shifting an empty trailer.

Public space changes the permit question

Louisville Metro Public Works lists a Pod or Dumpster Permit for right-of-way use. The city treats sidewalks, streets, alleys, and other public ways as space that must remain available for public use. If the only workable position is beyond the private property line, check the proposed location with Public Works before scheduling the drop.

Use the city options for the jobs that do not need a box

A dumpster is useful when debris will build over several work sessions or when the volume is too large for a practical self-haul. It is not the automatic answer for every cleanup. Louisville Metro offers large-item collection for approved household items, while construction and demolition debris is excluded from that service. The city also identifies its Waste Reduction Center as a self-haul option for construction debris.

Compare the work honestly. A small load that already fits safely in a pickup or trailer may be simpler to take to an approved facility. A room-by-room renovation, estate clearing, or project with bulky material may benefit from keeping a roll-off on site. The right choice depends on volume, loading labor, disposal rules, and how long the work will take.

Separate hazardous material before it reaches the pile

Do not treat every garage or basement item as ordinary debris. Louisville Metro directs motor oil, batteries, gasoline, chemicals, oil-based paint, pesticides, solvents, and similar household hazardous waste to Haz Bin at 7501 Grade Lane. Pull those items aside before anyone starts loading the container.

Keep uncertain material visible and describe it during the call. That includes liquids, sealed drums, automotive products, appliances, tires, and anything with a chemical label. Confirming the load before delivery protects the schedule and prevents a full container from needing to be sorted at pickup.

Tell us which side of the river gets the delivery

The listed service area reaches beyond Louisville into Jeffersontown, St. Matthews, Middletown, Shively, Okolona, Fern Creek, Prospect, and Mount Washington. It also includes New Albany, Jeffersonville, and Clarksville across the Ohio River. The city name in a mailing address is not enough to answer every placement question. We need the exact property and the authority that controls any public space beside it.

That distinction matters most on projects with no clear private loading area. A Louisville address may point to Metro Public Works. A nearby incorporated city may use its own office and application. An Indiana address is governed on the other side of the state line. We do not treat those rules as interchangeable. If the container stays fully on a suitable private surface, say so. If it needs curb, alley, sidewalk, or public parking space, identify that part of the plan before the delivery date.
